The Economic Report
A major economic story this month was the sharp rise in global oil prices amid conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to Gulf shipping. On March 12, crude oil briefly moved above $100 per barrel, even after the International Energy Agency announced a record 400-million-barrel emergency reserve release. On March 18, 2026, the Federal Reserve kept U.S. interest rates unchanged at 3.5%–3.75%. The Fed said economic activity was continuing to expand at a solid pace, but inflation remained somewhat elevated and uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook had increased.
The March 2026 U.S. jobs report, released on April 3, showed that employers added 178,000 jobs during March, while the unemployment rate was 4.3%. Job gains were concentrated in areas including health care, construction, and transportation and warehousing, while federal government employment continued to decline.
